American Idol Runner-Up Takes On Queen Mantle

The new frontman for Queen has said he can never replace Freddie Mercury, ahead of the band's appearance at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

Former American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert was hand-picked to tour with the band this summer after they performed together on the show in 2009.

He also sang with the band at this year's MTV Awards, to praise from both fans and critics.

Lambert is joining Queen for their concerts this month after his second album, Trespassing, was released in the UK on July 2.

He told Sky News: "It's a huge honour. Queen are rock royalty." And he admitted he had jumped at the chance to work with the band, despite being a "little intimidated".

But he insisted he was not trying to copy the flamboyant Mercury, who died of bronchopneumonia brought on by Aids in 1991.

"There will never be another Freddie Mercury," he said. "The big goal for me was how do I get on stage and pay my respects to his legacy? How do I make this part my own without straying too far?"

Asked how he found the other band members, he described them as "so down to earth, so friendly, so warm".

Queen will perform with Lambert at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on July 11, 12 and 14.
